Exploring the psychological and emotive potential of the human face, I create figurative art inspired by a diverse range of art historical influences including Byzantine iconography, African sculpture, and Expressionist painting. Elements of typography, signage and grafitti reflect my background in graphic design.
Driven by a passion for experimentation, I work from briefly delineated ideas and sketches, proceeding spontaneously and intuitively throughout the art making process. My computer becomes a repository for drawings, photographs, and scans of found objects which I manipulate to create digital collages. The completed pieces are produced on high resolution digital printers using archival papers and inks. Some pieces are treated further with drawing, painting, and encaustic to become mixed media works.
In addition to works on paper, I make primitive sculptures inspired by tribal masks and other artifacts of primal human cultures. As in my two-dimensional work, the facial expression becomes central to each piece.
